Mike Williamson Heading To Leeds?

Rumours have gathered pace over the last 48 hours regarding a loan move for Newcastle United central defender Mike Williamson.
Leeds were heavily linked with the 6 ft 4 man in the summer however, the asking price of £1.5m didn't appeal to Italian Owner Massimo Cellino. Another implication in the deal could be the player's wages. Leeds have worked tirelessly to reduce the cost of their wage budget over the summer with big earners Billy Sharp and Steve Morison leaving the club.

However, for Williamson to find regular football he will need to find another football club and Steve McLaren is reportedly open to the idea of letting him leave. The 31 year old started his trade at Torquay in 2001 and has since climbed the football league hierarchy. Having made 150 appearances for Newcastle in the Championship and Premier League, he has established himself as a well-known defender in the North East.

There have been mixed reviews over Mike Williamson with the majority of the Toon fans willing to pay for his Taxi fare down South, which is always rather amusing as well as disappointing.

One thing for certain is, Leeds need a partner for captain Sol Bamba. Rosler can't keep swapping Cooper and Bellusci every few games so dipping in the loan market for a new defender may not seem such a bad idea.

  1. makes sense for all parties. We "curry favor" with Leeds in the meantime for one of their star players in the January transfer window.
